Kishamichi Promenade

Kishamichi is a promenade leading from Sakuragicho Station to the Shinko area where Red Brick Warehouse is located.

A little away from Sakuragicho station, there is a bay at the mouth of Ooka River that flows by the side, spreading between the central area of Minato Mirai and Shinko area. Kishamichi is connecting the two banks across the bay.

Therefore, from the boardwalk, you can see the scenery of modern building group such as landmark tower, and at the same time enjoy the view of the waterside.

This is a map of Kishamichi. Although the starting point and the ending point are slightly misaligned for convenience of setting, this section of about 800 m is Kishamichi.


This promenade consists of two artificial islands and three truss bridges, using the waste line of the freight line that used to operate from Sakuragicho Station (former Yokohama Station) to Shinko Pier.

The steel framework of this truss bridge is absurd, just like that of a local line. Meanwhile, the other side of the bay is the center of Minato Mirai, skyscraper groups form ridgelines, which is one of the most modern aesthetic in Japan.

This modern landscape and the retro ruins of the Meiji era form one landscape on the same waterfront, a unique space where the contrast between modern and retro stands out.


This time, I will introduce about this Kishamichi in detail.


How to get to Kishamichi

The nearest station of Kishamichi is JR Sakuragi-cho station, and there is a entrance of the promenade about 5 minutes on foot from there.

First, go to the Minato Mirai side from the north gate (east exit) of Sakuragi-cho station. If you go out on the other side, you will go to Noge Area so please be careful. It is OK if you can see the Landmark Tower and Cosmo Clock from where you came.

As you exit the east exit, there is a square in front of the station, so walk from the side in a straight direction and cross the intersection ahead.

Opposite the intersection, there is a building with a hook-shaped appearance named CROSS GATE.


Go straight for about 50 meters on the sidewalk and you will find the NIPPON MARU intersection. Cross over it there is Kishamichi entrance.

By the way, on the left of the entrance is NIPPON MARU Memorial Park, the sailing ship NIPPON MARU is moored in the dock. The hull can not be seen from the promenade, but you can see the mast.


Walking on Kishamichi

This is the place immediately after entering the promenade. The water surface spreads to the left and right, but it seems to be along a canal rather than a bay because the opposite shore is so close.

The left 1/3 of the road surface was a board walk, where the railroad was embedded to show that a freight train had been passing. This track continues from here to the end of Kishamichi.

Pillars with lined inverted cone shaped umbrellas lined up on both sides of the road are electric lights. At night, the light like the illumination of the Christmas tree will come on. There is a speaker at the top and occasionally music is flowing.


First truss bridge and elongated artificial island

When you start walking, you will have the first truss bridge. The name of this bridge is Minato No.1 Bridge. It was produced in American Bridge Company in 1907.

Crossing the truss bridge, it is the first artificial island. This island is narrow and slender, and the other side of the handrail is a stone pier in the revetment.

The second truss bridge and the green space

The second truss bridge is Minato No.2 Bridge, the name is a serial number. It is made by the American Bridge Company as well as No.1 at the same time.

Crossing the bridge, there is the second artificial island, where the width is a little wider and the bank on the Minato Mirai side is a green space.

You can see the end point Navios Yokohama by walking along the promenade.

The third truss bridge, Minato No.3 Bridge.

This bridge is derived from the other two. The Yubari River Bridge in Hokkaido and the Edo River Bridge were diverted and built as Ooka River Bridge in 1928. A part of it was relocated here in 1997.

End point of Kishamichi

This building is Navios Yokohama. Kishamichi continues to the point where it passed through this arch – like colonnade.

This arch is huge and the height is the sixth floor of the building. It was set up to conserve the landscape that continues from Kishamichi to the Red Brick Warehouse.


The track will be cut off just past the arch. This is the end of Kishamichi.

Continuation of this track

Kishamichi ends here, but there is still continuation on this track.

Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse can be seen beyond the end of the Kishamichi. There is no railroad at the Bankokubashi intersection and the Shinko Central Square up to the Warehouse. In this section the railroad is interrupted.

However, when crossing there and going to the Red Brick Park, the railway line will appear again.


The railway extends toward the Shinko pier within the Red Brick Park grounds. At the end of the site there is the remains of the former Yokohama Port Station platform, which is the end of the track.

This is a view of the Queen’s Tower over the bay from the promenade. Next to Yokohama Bay Hotel Tokyu, there is InterContinental Hotel and Cosmo Clock with a short interval.

Evening landscape

In the evening, I took the Minato No.1 Bridge just before the sun goes down. It gets dark around, and the inverse cone shaped street lamps light up.

It is the Landmark Tower taken from the deck of the green space. The sun goes down just behind the tower.

The view from the Queen’s Tower to Cosmo Clock which I took on the verge of the darkness of the night falling. At this time the houseboat will be rolling out to the bay.

Cultural heritage

Kishamichi are also valuable as cultural heritage. The Minato No.1, No.2, No.3 Bridge, and the revetment on the side of the promenade are certified as historic buildings in Yokohama City.

There is one of the modernized industrial heritage group 33 approved by the METI, “Modernized industrial heritage group that tells the progress of Yokohama port development”. Kishamichi is registered with this along with the Red Brick Warehouse and Dockyard Garden.
